Togo was a champion racer and Seppala's favorite. Balto was also Seppala's, but the Norweigan didn't like him too much because he wasn't very fast or skilled. In the end, Balto proved him and everyone else wrong when he navigated through 80 mph winds and whiteout conditions.
Even if Togo ran the longest distance, and I'm not saying he is any less of a hero, what would it matter if the serum wasn't delivered? Maybe Balto is more than the critics think he is.

Thanks for that very interesting background. As far as I'm concerned, dogs are God's most noble creation, and we are here to take care of them, as they so reliably do for us.

Team work !! You guys ever heard of that.. Always looking for a hero.. Togo, Balto.. You think the dogs care.. They don't care.. It's team work!! All even the dogs that died.. Should get honored.. If it weren't for them.. Alaska wouldve been hit bad with sickness..

You make a great point. As far as I'm concerned, all dogs are heroes. That said, they (like us) live in packs and choose to follow their leaders.

THANK YOU TOGO!! Anyone knows the REAL story knows that Togo traveled damn near 3 times what any of the other sled dogs did.
TOGO IS THE REAL HERO!!!

How about the five dogs who died of burst lungs getting the serum to Togo...maybe they were the real heroes?

Just an unbelievable story. Indeed, Balto, Togo, and everyone else that was involved in this relay are heroes to me. God bless them all

Oh wow. I didn't know about all this. The story I knew was from the 1995 movie of Balto. This has definitely enlightened me. :) Glad to see the story is still around on Youtube or else I would never have learned the true story. Dogs sure are awesome. ^^ Also curious, was Balto half dog, half wolf like in the movie?

Was Balto really half wolf?

togo and balto i love both, no comparison who the champion was. both did a very good job, balto got the serum delivered on time, and togo though ground blizzard that prevented his master from being able to see the path,he was able to navigate to the roadhouse preventing certain death to his team and also finished the run. <3

All those are heroes, but Balto was a husy/wofl mix! How badass is that?!

Nome was doomed in the outbreak of Diphtheria killing nearly the entire population and if it wasn't for the brave mushers. and their dogs along with the well needed serum, Nome would have been a ghost town... like the soldiers and freedom fighters alike, I tip my hat to them.
